The Masc Archive: Intimacy of Thai Tomboys

Thailand, 2025

While attending an all-girls Christian school in Bangkok, MIN witnessed first-hand a vibrant culture of tomboys—known locally as “toms”—flourishing within the strict, conservative school environment. Yet toms remain underrepresented in global LGBTIQ+ narratives and are often misunderstood as being women who simply want to be more masculine. Like any identity on the LGBTIQ+ spectrum, the tomboy identity encompasses unique and nuanced layers, which this project brings to light primarily through medium-format film photographs.

MIN documented a group of masc-presenting figures in traditional Thai sarongs during a moment inspired by the historic pre-bathing ritual, when women would gather to bathe together. In this intimate setting, fashion as a conventional gender marker is muted, allowing identity to emerge authentically through bare skin, subtle gestures and unspoken expression in the eyes.

The combination of traditional attire and modern accessories bridges past and present, reflecting how toms have long existed within Thai society—quietly visible and historically significant—and how they are still asserting their presence today. For MIN, this project is ultimately a personal offering: a tribute to Thai heritage and a seamless move to bring tomboy narratives beyond the local art scene and into wider recognition.
