DAD

Thailand, 2024

The full movie will be visible Mach 2025

DAD tells the heartfelt story of Pop Bandit, a middle-aged man who creates a reality between his promise to his father (on his deathbed) to start a family and his own homosexuality. Defying societal norms, Pop and his wife Mae Payong embark on a transformative journey, facing challenges and unexpected joys. When Pop’s mother expresses a desire for grandchildren, they decide to have children and twin May and Mine are born. Despite societal judgment, the family’s unwavering support for Pop becomes a source of strength. The film is a poignant tale of acceptance, resilience, and the unconventional path of a rainbow family, bound by love.

DAD is multimedia: interviews with the four protagonists alternate with reenacted scenes from Pop’s youth. And that is good Thai style and film tradition.

The Genesis of DAD

In 2023, fourth-year communication and media students from the Bangkok University were assigned to produce a short film with a Queer subject. The result was 10 short films, including the short documentary DAD (10 min.). This catchy short story had more potential. It did win the 3rd place among the 10 short films. In collaboration with the Bangkok University, Document Our History Now offered the group of students the opportunity to produce their documentary into a 35 minutes version, which they finished in 2024 and has the potential to reach a larger audience in Thailand and beyond.

The Jury

The students themselves: “DAD is the story of a son’s journey to honor his father’s last wish transforms his life, leading to an unconventional yet heartwarming tale of love, acceptance, and the resilience of unconventional families. This project stems from our team’s passion to break storytelling boundaries. Motivated by a deep desire to explore identity, family dynamics and social expectations – especially for LGBTQ – we are committed to present an authentic story”.
