Dwi Asrul Fajar

Dwi Asrul Fajar is a Jakarta based artist born 1986, his work studies the psychological facets of the self through the medium of photography, text and sound, analysing their layers, structures and narratives to question or re-articulate its similarities, contrast and juxtaposition. Received Bachelor’s degree of Indonesian Literature from Faculty of Humanities at Airlangga University, Surabaya – Indonesia (2010). He finished Study on collective and contemporary art ecosystem at Gudskul (2018-2019).

In 2018, he co-founded Ekstrak Kolektif, aimed as a representation and manifestation of each member’s cultural background and artistic practices in addressing the social issues in the context of Indonesian contemporary art. Ekstrak is a space for sharing knowledge and experimentation for its member, develops a collaborative nature with emphasises on the distribution of knowledge, networking, mutual cooperation, and friendship.

He currently (2024) works as a producer for an Independent news agency, working on podcast which is tackling various topics such as gender and sexual diversity, human right and social justice, and environmental issue.Through Love Buzz, a podcast he produced on queer individuals in Indonesia, he initiated photography and podcast workshops on 2021 and 2022 for LGBTIQ+ individuals and allies.

Photography project during 2024 :

‘Amongst The Waves, Doves, Spiders, and Its Webs’

With the support of Document Our History Now, Asrul executed this photography project in May 2024, leading to an exposition on Bali in October 2024. This with the support of Erasmus Huis in Jakarta.
